Northern Territory to Queensland

28 juni 2013 - Proserpine, Australië

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since our last blog post but we've haven't had great reception along the way. In the NT we saw a lot of wildlife (including over 400 dead kangaroos, possums and cows along the highway, and the rarely sighted Jabiru bird, which was very much alive of course). We stopped in Jabiru where we had the best curry chicken pie ever and started our travels through Kakadu national park. Although Kakadu was touristy and not very accessible by 2WD, we had a great time learning about how the aboriginal people took care of the land.

We then went through Pine Creek (great buffalo burger), Katherine (time for some grocery shopping and visiting Nitmulik of Katherine Gorge), Mataranka (Wonderful 34 degrees hotsprings), Tennant Creek (Gold mines and Aboriginal culture), Prairie (hand feeding buffalo's with old bread:-) ). These towns/small cities were the 'bigger' places along the way. We also stopped in a handful of smaller towns that were 200km apart and were just one caravan park and a gas station.

After a dusty trip through the Eastern Part of the Northern Territory with nothing but barren grass plains, we arrived in Queensland. From the mining city of Mount Isa we went on to Townsville, the capital of Northern Queensland. We didn't stay in the city for long since it felt very strange, but we did visit ReefHQ, a living reef in an aquarium that would prepare us for what we would see in the actual Great Barrier Reef. We then drove u[p to mission beach where we stayed on a campground on the beach for two nights, we loved it!

From mission beach, we went on a sailing boat to the reef and snorkeled all day, it was great and very beautiful (we hope our underwater camera took some decent pictures). The day after, we even saw the very rare Cassowary. Now we are on our way to Eungella national park, to find the elusive Platipus and take some great pictures of it that we can show you later.

This was the story thus far, but we've got a lot more stuff to tell you...
